Duckwall-Alco reports lower sales

Duckwall-Alco Stores said today that its sales for the four-week period ending May 2 dropped 7.4 percent.

The Abilene retailer said sales decreased to $33.2 million from $35.8 million a year ago. Same-store sales were down 8 percent.

Sales for the first quarter of fiscal 2011 decreased 2.3 percent to $111.2 million compared $113.8 million in the previous year.

Rich Wilson, president and CEO, said the April sales were hurt by the shift of Easter into the March period. Combined March and April same-store sales were down 2.4 percent.

Duckwall-Alco is a regional retailer that has 256 stores primarily in smaller communities across 23 states.
