The annual January swoon struck the Wichita housing market again, with new and existing home sales down 36 percent from December and 16 percent from January 2009.
Sales totaled 346 in January, down from 560 in December 2009 and from 413 in January 2009, according to figures released today from the Wichita Area Association of Realtors and the South Central Kansas Multiple Listing Service.
However, the median sales price of existing homes was up 7.2 percent from a year ago.
Tessa Hultz, the new CEO of the Wichita Area Association of Realtors, said in a news release the decline was the normal seasonal falloff seen in the coldest winter months.
It's in line, she said, with the 34 percent decrease in existing home sales from December 2008 to January 2009.
