Facade program deadline extended to Jan. 15

Small businesses can apply for money from the city's Neighborhood Facade Program until the close of business on Jan. 15. The original deadline was Jan. 1, although early documents listed the later deadline.

"In order to ensure that all interested businesses have an opportunity to apply for these funds, we thought it would be fair to honor the date that was in early staff documents," said Mary K. Vaughn, director of housing and community services.

Vaughn's department manages the city's Community Development Block Grant funds awarded from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The facade program is funded from that program.

Applications must be turned in to the Office of Urban Development on the 13th floor of City Hall. Allen Bell, urban development director, said nearly $1 million in requests have been received. A total of $200,000 is available for the facade program, which makes it important that all applications are received in a timely fashion to meet preliminary eligibility criteria, Bell said.
