Ground has been broken in Bel Aire for a new residential community, the Landing at Central Park.
Located north of 45th Street on Rock Road, the three-phase development is the third residential addition in Central Park, a large tract south of 53rd that stretches between Woodlawn and Rock Road. It will include traditional ranch-style houses from the $175,000s.
The builder is Moeder Construction of Wichita. The houses will be marketed by J.P. Weigand & Sons' new-homes division.
Bel Aire administrator Ty Lasher said the project represents "residential diversification," targeting buyers looking for single-level houses.
It's the latest project in the residential and commercial partnership between Weigand and the city forged in December 2008.
The project dovetails with the Wichita school district's decision to purchase 140 acres near the Landing for a new K-8 school and a new high school, said Richelle Knotts, director of Weigand's new-homes division.
"Brent Stewart (a commercial agent for Weigand) brought the deal to the table in the very beginning, and he was already pursuing this when we formed the new-homes division," Knotts said.
"It's our first project, but there are others in the works to launch after the first of the year. This one's our first big step going forward."
A model row of three furnished houses and six move-in-ready houses is scheduled for completion in the early spring of 2010.
Development amenities include a neighborhood lake, cul-de-sac and tree-lined lots, three-car garages, walk-out and view-out basements and walking paths leading to a community pool.
