WICHITA _ GracePoint Church closed Thursday on the purchase of the vacant Cinemas West theater at 9035 W. Central.
Shelden Architecture has designed the remodel of the facility and Rose Hill Bank is financing the project.
The Rev. Bryson Butts, lead pastor, said the church should open for its first worship service during the second half of 2010. The church will have ample space for children and youth and will have an auditorium that can seat 550 adults.
"Moving into a permanent facility will help us reach more people and to better fulfill the vision God has called us to," Butts said. "Early on, our goal was to get into a building by 2010. That dream is finally becoming reality."
The building used to be the only theater on the west side of town and a major anchor tenant for Westlink Shopping Center.
