Woman's shooting stumps police

Police are struggling to make headway in their investigation into a shooting Wednesday night in west Wichita.

A 23-year-old woman was grazed on the head by one of numerous bullets fired just after 7 p.m. into a house in the 700 block of North Hoover, near Central and I-235, police said.

"We don't have any suspects, we don't have any motive," Lt. Doug Nolte said Thursday. "Right now, investigators are really trying to salvage what they can and find out as much as they can."

The woman's 2-year-old son and a 25-year-old man at the house were not injured in the incident, Nolte said.

Several bullets were fired into the house from the front — perhaps from the street — but neighbors told officers they neither saw nor heard anything unusual at the time of the shooting.

The woman was taken to Wesley Medical Center, where an examination showed the bullet did not penetrate her skull.

"This does not appear to be a retaliation for anything recently," Nolte said.

Anyone with information about the incident should call 911 or Crime Stoppers at 316-267-2111. Tips can also be submitted to Crime Stoppers online at www.wsccs.com or by text via CRIMES (274637).

Begin the message with TIP217. That should generate an auto reply with a tip identification. Follow-up tips can be sent by replying to that message.
