Wichita schools among winners at Science Olympiad

Local schools were among the top winners at the 27th annual Kansas Science Olympiad held Saturday at Wichita State University.

All Saints Catholic School of Wichita and Leawood Middle School claimed the top spots in the large and small middle-school divisions, according to a news release announcing the tournament’s preliminary results. Students from Olathe North High School won the top large high school honors, while Goodland High School left the competition as the winner among small high schools.

Other Wichita-area schools placing in the top three in their divisions were St. Thomas Aquinas of Wichita, Charles Robinson Middle School and Maize South High School. Results will be verified in the coming week, the release said.

Teams from All Saints, Leawood Middle School and Olathe North High will go on to compete in the National Science Olympiad set for May 16-17 at the University of Central Florida in Orlando.

More than 1,000 students from schools statewide tested their knowledge and skills in biology, chemistry, geology, physics and technology during the tournament’s 46 events. The program is coordinated by WSU’s Fairmount Center for Science and Mathematics Education and is sponsored by the university and Spirit AeroSystems.
