It was a scene straight from Hollywood: A man saw a thief stealing his car, so he ran out and jumped on the Monte Carlo’s hood as it was heading down the street.
But this didn’t happen at a California studio; it took place Thursday morning in the 6400 block of West Hollywood in Wichita, police said.
The 29-year-old man was inside his house northwest of MacArthur and Ridge Road shortly after 7:30 a.m. when he saw a man take his car, Wichita police Lt. Doug Nolte said. He ran out and caught up to the car within a couple houses of his residence and jumped onto the hood in an attempt to halt the theft.
About a block from the victim’s house, the car stopped near a gold Mazda, Nolte said. A man in the Mazda pointed a gun out of the car and fired one shot in the air.

That convinced the owner of the Monte Carlo to get off the hood, Nolte said. He ran back to his house to report the crime as the two cars left the area.
The stolen Monte Carlo is dark blue and has the Kansas license plate 318 APV. The man who took it is a white male in his mid-20s wearing a blue and black hooded sweatshirt, a black shirt and a silver necklace.
The man in the Mazda is a white male in his mid-20s who was wearing a black stocking cap, gray jacket and black gloves.
