When Sheplers called Samantha Barnes at work to tell her she had won $10,000 in a drawing, she thought it was probably a scam.
“Are you serious?” she asked.
They were, and she has the check and, soon, the boots to prove it.
Store executives performed one of their most enjoyable jobs Tuesday evening at the Wichita store: handing out money.

The company periodically holds the cash giveaway for customers of its 21 stores, which stretch from Orlando, Fla., to Reno, Nev., as well as the thousands of Internet customers, said vice president of store operations Ed Gerstenkorn.
In all, there were 60,000 entries from around the world. It’s pretty surprising that Barnes is from Wichita, the home of Sheplers, he said.
Barnes is a big Sheplers fan. She said she’s already got some $300 Tony Lama boots picked out and they will be one of the first things she gets with the money.
After taking out some for taxes, she’ll use the rest for paying bills, a little wardrobe enhancement and, in March, to take her boyfriend Adam Ward on a trip to Las Vegas.
“Oh, yeah, we’re not married, it’s mine,” she said, with a twinkle in her eye.
“Yeah,” agreed Ward. “It’s hers.”
