Wichita State to host conference encouraging girls to pursue science careers

Wichita State University will host a conference next month to encourage middle-school girls to consider careers in science, technology, engineering and math.

The Expanding Your Horizons conference, 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Nov. 2 in the Campus Activities Center Theater at WSU, is the first in Wichita, university officials said in a news release. Expanding Your Horizons is a national program that gives girls a chance to meet role models in science disciplines and engage in hands-on activities.

Registration is limited to 100 participants and will be processed first-come, first served through Oct. 15. The registration fee is $12 and includes lunch and a T-shirt. Prizes will be awarded at the event, including scholarships to science-related summer camps.

While girls participate in workshops such as “Robot Basketball,” “DNA in a Bottle” and “Pet Rescue 911” at the conference, their parents can attend sessions on financing college, ACT test prep, and the process of applying to college.
