Crash near Hutchinson hurts 2, damages gas line and power pole

An earlier version of this story reversed the names of the streets that traveled by the vehicles.

A collision between a semi and work truck Friday in eastern Reno County left at two men injured and damaged a gas line and power pole, according to Reno County Sheriff Randy Henderson.

A 50-year-old man driving the truck and his passenger were hurt in the crash, which happened at 2:17 p.m. at the intersection of East Avenue G and Obee Road, near Hutchinson, Henderson said by e-mail. The truck was headed south on Obee Road when it was struck by the semi, which was traveling east on G, he said. The impact pushed both vehicles into a power pole and punctured a high-pressure gas line.

The 50-year-old man was flown to Via Christi Hospital St. Francis with serious injuries, Henderson said, and his passenger – a man – went to a Hutchinson hospital for evaluation. Meanwhile, gas and electrical crews responded to the scene to contain the utility hazards.

Westar Energy was reporting more than 200 outages in Reno County shortly after 4 p.m. Friday, including some around Avenue G and Obee Road.

Henderson said the semi driver refused medical treatment. His age and that of the passenger in the work truck were unclear Friday evening.
