Wichita weather: Thunderstorms likely later in the day

Strong thunderstorms are likely to roll through the Wichita area later today, forecasters say.

The fast-moving storms could bring heavy rain, strong winds and large hail. A tornado can’t be ruled out, according to the National Weather Service.

Before the storms arrive, highs could reach the upper 80s. South winds will be robust under mostly cloudy skies, forecasters say, with steady breezes in the 20s and gusts approaching 40 miles an hour.

Storms are most likely to arrive in the metropolitan area after 2 p.m., forecasters say. The front will bring with it much colder temperatures, with lows early Saturday morning falling into the mid-40s.

Showers and thunderstorms could persist into the early morning hours on Saturday, forecasters say. Winds will remain strong, gusting to more than 35 miles an hour.

The weekend will be cooler, with highs in the low to mid-60s and lows in the 40s.
