Starting Tuesday, the Sedgwick County Health Department will provide free flu shots to certain groups.
The shots will be available for free to people 19 and older who are uninsured. Shots also will be available to uninsured children 18 and younger and children with state-sponsored insurance plans such as Medicaid, Amerigroup, UnitedHealthcare and Sunflower.
Residents who qualify may get a shot at the health department’s clinic at 2716 W. Central in Wichita. If you don’t qualify for free shots, the health department recommends seeing your doctor or visiting a pharmacy that offers them. A news release from the department said that flu shots are recommended for anyone older than 6 months, unless otherwise directed by a physician. Flu shots are recommended every year as different strains of flu affect people year to year.
The health department also is reminding people to follow these simple tips to avoid the spread of seasonal flu:
