Motorcycle groups, disabled Wichitans gather for Watson Park picnic

Four local motorcycle groups participated Tuesday at a Watson Park Picnic and Fun Night with the Arc of Sedgwick County, a nonprofit organization that helps provide educational and social opportunities for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Although the Arc provides activity nights each month, the Tuesday after Labor Day has become an annual tradition for people to enjoy the park and its facilities, said Kevin Fish, the group’s executive director.

Having the motorcycle groups present gives Arc members a chance to form friendships. More than 150 Arc members gathered for the picnic and activities, and 30 motorcyclists provided rides.

“A lot of our people have never ridden a motorcycle,” Fish said. “It is a thrill for them to get to ride and get up close and touch the bike and meet people.”

Motorcycle groups participating in the event included representatives from Open Prairie Trikers, Bikers against Child Abuse, Christian Motorcycle Association and Kingdom Riders.
