Disturbance at Sedgwick County Jail over inmate taking lunches

A disturbance involving 54 inmates at the Sedgwick County Jail began with an inmate being caught taking sack lunches from a deputy’s refrigerator, the Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday.

During the weekly briefing for reporters, the office gave this account: At 8:30 p.m. Monday, a deputy confronted a 36-year-old inmate in Pod 4 after the inmate was seen taking three sack lunches from a deputy’s refrigerator. “The inmate refused commands and took a fighting stance,” the statement said. “In order to gain distance the deputy pushed the inmate back and the inmate and the other 53 inmates became belligerent. Twenty additional deputies were called to the POD to help rack the POD down.”

The statement said that after about seven minutes, all of the inmates were “secured back in their cells.” No injuries were reported.
