Two stabbed with machete in argument over trash at McLean apartments

An argument over trash led to two people being sent to a local hospital after being hacked with a machete, police said.

A 23-year-old woman who was upset with a neighbor over trash being thrown onto her porch came outside with a machete and began arguing with him shortly before 10 p.m. Monday at McLean Apartments, 2626 W. Ninth St., Lt. Doug Nolte said.

The argument escalated into a physical fight, Nolte said, and the 57-year-old neighbor wrested the machete away from the woman and struck her in the back and the neck. A 56-year-old man intervened to stop the attack, only to receive a wound in the back.

McLean Apartments is just west of the Arkansas River in the Indian Hills neighborhood.

The 57-year-old neighbor was arrested on suspicion of aggravated battery, Nolte said, though the woman who initially wielded the machete may also be jailed once she recovers from her wounds.

She and the the man who intervened were taken to Via Christi Hospital on St. Francis for treatment of wounds that are not life-threatening, he said.
