The heat index is likely to soar to dangerous levels in southern Kansas – including the Wichita metropolitan area – today, forecasters say.
Highs should top 100 today in Wichita again, with the heat index reaching 107 or more. South winds in the teens will gust near 30 miles an hour, forecasters say.
A heat advisory is in effect from 2 to 8 p.m. today for 17 counties in central and southern Kansas, including Barton, Ellsworth, Saline, Rice, Sedgwick, Reno, Harper, Sumner and Cowley.
Temperatures could reach 105 in some areas of Kansas, according to the National Weather Service.
A slight chance of rain arrives tonight, with chances increasing late tonight and into Wednesday.
