Rolling Hills Zoo near Salina offering visitors chance to feed the penguins

The Rolling Hills Zoo near Salina will now allow some of its visitors to feed the penguins.

Twice a day, two visitors and their companions will be selected to go behind the scenes at the zoo to learn about the penguins, their diet, habitat and how handlers at the zoo care for them.

Visitors need to sign up in advance. Cost is $45 per penguin feeder for zoo members and $50 per penguin feeder for nonmembers. The chaperone or companion will not be charged extra for accompanying the penguin feeder. However, according to a press release, officials said the penguin feeder will be required to put on rainboots and plastic gloves to feed the zoo’s four African penguins.

The feedings are at 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. daily.

Visitors can sign up and pay to be a penguin feeder at the zoo’s Elephant Truck’s Gift Shop in the Wildlife Museum Lobby at Rolling Hills. Penguin feeders must be at least 5 years old to participate.

The zoo is offering the experience from Saturday through Sept. 30. For more information, go to the zoo’s website at www.rollinghillswildlife.com.

The Rolling Hills Zoo is six miles west of Salina on I-70. Take Exit 244 off I-70 (also known as Hedville Road) and travel two miles south to the entrance.
