Man hurt in two-car crash outside North Broadway store

A two-car collision on North Broadway on Monday propelled the two vehicles into a clothing store parking lot and sent one driver to a hospital with potentially serious injuries, a police official said.

Witnesses and bystanders got the injured Wichita man out of his Mercedes and gave him first aid after the car caught fire, police Sgt. Chris McAuliffe said. The man, who is about 40, didn’t appear to have burn injuries, McAuliffe said.

The collision occurred at about 12:15 p.m. at 20th and Broadway.

One of the two cars, a Honda, came into the parking lot and appeared to hit a pole supporting the awning at the store entrance. Eighteen-year-old Selene Fuentes was sweeping the floor near the front of the store when she heard a noise and saw the Honda. “We’re fine here,” she said after the accident. “Luckily, that pole stopped it.”

Based on a preliminary investigation, it appears a 21-year-old Wichita woman was driving the Honda east on 20th when it collided with the man’s Mercedes, which was going north on Broadway, McAuliffe said. The traffic on 20th Street has stop signs.

The woman had minor injuries, he said.
