Man sentenced to 30 years in prison for producing child porn

A 38-year-old Roeland Park man who photographed a nude toddler sitting a roasting pan in an oven will spend 30 years in federal prison for producing child porn, U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom’s office said.

The images are among sexually explicit images taken of at least three boys – then ages 11, 8 and 2 – by Michael D. Arnett at his home, Grissom said in a news release. Arnett pleaded guilty in February to a single count of producing child pornography after investigators found the material on his computer on May 15, 2012.

The case opened when Homeland Security seized photos, including some of victims thought to be from the Overland Park area, Grissom said; investigators traced the origins of a water bottle bearing “Midwest Aquatics,” the name of a Johnson County swim and scuba center, and phone number with a 913 area code to find the victims.

Teachers at a Shawnee Mission elementary school eventually helped investigator identify the three boys in Arnett’s photographs, Grissom said.
