Maize High senior wins $5,000 in Best Bagger Competition

Taylor Cantrell, a Maize High School senior, won first runner-up in the 2013 National Best Bagger Competition in Las Vegas on Sunday.

Cantrell, who works at the Dillons Marketplace at 21st and Maize Road, won a $5,000 prize, a Dillons spokeswoman said Monday. Cantrell competed against 22 other contestants from across the country.

Cantrell spent months training for the competition, which is judged on speed, how prudently items were placed in the bag and if the weight of the groceries was evenly distributed among three bags.

Contestants also were awarded points based on attitude, personality and appearance.

According to media reports, the winner was Andrew Borracchini, a Seattle-area man who had won the Washington State championship the past two years and was competing in the national competition for a second time.
