Two people have been killed in a one-van accident at Central and Brookside, near Edgemoor, on the city’s east side, Wichita police said.
Witness accounts said a late model Dodge or Chrysler van was eastbound on Central just before 3 p.m. Sunday when it lost control and crossed the westbound lanes of Central, Wichita Police Lt. Sam Hanley said.
The van ran off the roadway and slammed into a rock-lined ravine bank covered by a bridge on Central, Hanley said, crumpling the van’s front end and ejecting a passenger.
The driver and the passenger in the van were pronounced dead at the scene by emergency crews, Hanley said. No names were being released pending the notification of next of kin.

A dog riding in the van also was killed in the crash.
“People are summarizing that the accident may be due to a medical problem,” Hanley said. “Speed doesn’t appear to be a factor in the accident according to witnesses.”
The accident closed a stretch of Central as officers worked the scene of the crash in the ravine, and attempted to remove the van.
