Emergency Accident Reporting Plan lifted for Wichita area

Numerous accidents were reported along Kellogg in west Wichita around midday Thursday in the wake of a brief but heavy band of snow that glazed elevated roadways, authorities said.

Accidents were reported on Kellogg at West, Tyler, Maize and near I-235, a Sedgwick County dispatch supervisor said. The Emergency Accident Reporting Plan was activated for Wichita shortly before 12:45 p.m. Thursday. It was lifted about eight hours later, just before 9 p.m.

At one point early Thursday afternoon, law enforcement officers were working an estimated 14 accidents within a two-mile stretch of Kellogg.

The National Weather Service in Wichita reported a narrow band of snow about 30 miles wide passed over the metropolitan area, dropping no more than 0.10 of an inch onto the area. But that was enough to make elevated roadways slick – just as it had done Wednesday morning.
