Dighton girl, 16, killed after SUV strikes deer

A 16-year-old Dighton girl was killed Friday night after the SUV in which she was riding on I-70 in Ellis County struck a deer and flipped over, according to a Kansas Highway Patrol report.

Hope James died in the accident that also injured the driver, Christopher M. Johnson, 28, and three passengers: Rebecca R. Harrison, 15; Wyatt A. Marsteller, 17; and Iesha D. Gray, 15.

Johnson was driving a 2004 GMC Yukon eastbound on I-70 about 10:30 p.m. when he swerved to miss a deer, the report said. He hit the deer anyway as he drove off the shoulder and overcorrected, rolling the vehicle over on its top, the report said.

All of the injured, who were also from Dighton, were taken to Hays Medical Center.

Everyone in the vehicle was wearing a seat belt, the report said.
