Wandering naked man had been in crash, records show

The 22-year-old man who was found wandering naked in southeast Wichita on Thursday morning had walked away from a rollover accident several hours earlier, police records show.

Several people called 911 shortly after 8 a.m. Thursday to report a man behaving suspiciously near Harry and Hillside, Lt. Steve Kenney said. Witnesses said the man held one small bush atop his head — described at times as a “tree crown” — and another next to his waist. He refused to give his name or say what he was doing.

An officer checking on the report found him trying to get into All Saints Catholic Church just east of Harry and Hillside, Kenney said. He was taken just down the street to Via Christi Hospital on East Harry, where an officer used a Taser on him after he began fighting with hospital staff attempting to evaluate and treat him.

He was booked into the Sedgwick County Jail on suspicion of numerous offenses, including public nudity.

Records show he was driving east on Lincoln just after 3:45 a.m. when the car skidded on the rain-slickened street, slid into the lane divider, hit a road sign and rolled over next to Clifton. He reported the crash to a relative and then walked away from the scene. The relative then called 911.
