Jury trial starts for ex-convict charged with rape, second-degree murder

Jury selection is under way in the second-degree murder trial of an ex-convict charged with beating a 24-year-old Wichita man to death and raping the man’s 19-year-old sister.

Sedgwick County District Judge Terry Pullman is presiding at the trial of Clyde W. Johnson Jr., 50, who is charged with rape, second-degree murder and aggravated battery. Wichita police said Johnson beat Joshua Northcutt with a 2-foot-long machine bolt after a party in the 600 block of North Topeka.

Johnson was discharged from the Kansas Department of Corrections in 2007 after serving time for rape, aggravated sodomy, aggravated incest, robbery and burglary.
