Fire, pepper spray used in Wichita estate sale robbery

A woman used fire as a distraction and pepper spray as a weapon to steal from a Wichita estate sale, police said Saturday.

The robbery occurred at about 2:25 p.m. Friday at a residence in the 600 block of North Kessler, police Sgt. Bart Brunscheen said today. Police think the robber set drapes on fire as a distraction. The robber shot pepper spray into the face of a woman running the estate sale and fled with a metal cash box, Brunscheen said. The fire damage was limited to the drapes; an arson investigator was called to the scene.

The suspect is described as a woman, age 25 to 30, 5 feet 9 inches tall, about 140 pounds, with shoulder-length brown hair and wearing a blue shirt and blue pants. She was driving a newer, bright blue Ford Focus without a visible tag.
