Three people in their 20s were arrested early Wednesday morning after they were caught trying to steal scrap iron, Wichita police said.
A passerby noticed people acting suspiciously at Boge Iron and Metal in the 800 block of South St. Francis, just south of Kellogg, shortly before 5 a.m. Wednesday, Lt. Joe Schroeder said.
He called 911 and reported the suspicious behavior.
“One individual, when a car passed by, would go ducking behind a truck,” Schroeder said.
At other times, the man would lie on the ground to avoid being seen, he said.
The caller sat on the curb across the street and directed the officers to where the three were loading scrap iron into a Ford Explorer, Schroeder said.
Two men, ages 27 and 28, and a 26-year-old woman were arrested on suspicion of felony theft — meaning property worth more than $1,000.
