Man with Down syndrome beaten with hammer, screwdriver; stepfather arrested

Wichita police arrested a 37-year-old man Friday night in connection with an aggravated battery of his 44-year-old stepson.

Sgt. Scott Brunow said police were called to Wesley Medical Center a little before 9 p.m. Friday where the 44-year-old man, who has Down syndrome, was being treated for a number of injuries, including broken fingers and a hematoma to his head.

Brunow said the victim had been beaten with several tools, including a hammer, pliers and a screwdriver.

Police arrested the stepfather after investigating the crime, which Brunow said occurred in a home where the two men lived in the 300 block of south Meadow Haven, southwest of Maple and I-235.

Brunow said the victim was taken to the hospital by his 41-year-old brother.
