Craig Gabel won’t seek recount in close House race

Wichita businessman Craig Gabel said Friday he will not seek a recount in the Republican primary election result that left him losing a close state House race.

Gabel had said he would consider paying the $1,700 filing fee for a recount after Thursday’s canvassing of provisional ballots by the Sedgwick County Election Office still left him trailing Rick Lindsey by 15 votes, 483 to 468, in the 96th District. He had until 5 p.m. Friday to ask for a recount.

“I think we’ll go with what’s there,” Gabel said. “I had someone up there (watching the canvassing proceedings), and they felt it was done well, so it’s not going to get any better.”

Lindsey will face Democrat Brandon Whipple in the general election Nov. 6.
