Man fires shots in attempted robbery of cab driver

Police are looking for a man who tried to rob a cab driver and then fired shots at the taxi before fleeing in east Wichita late Thursday afternoon.

A driver for ABC Taxi responded to a call for a ride from the Papa Murphy’s at 4811 E. Central at 5:25 p.m. Thursday, Lt. Doug Nolte said. He picked up a man in his late teens, who told him to go east on Central.

After the cab had gone a few blocks, the rider asked the driver to pull over in the 5200 block of East Central, between Oliver and Edgemoor. After he got out, he pulled out a chrome handgun and demanded all of the driver’s fare money, Nolte said. When the driver refused, the suspect fired several shots at the cab. The front windows of the cab were shattered by gunfire.

The robber then ran north from the scene on foot. The cab driver was not injured, Nolte said.

He described the rider as a black male who is 5-feet-7 and 135 pounds. He wore green shorts, a white T-shirt and a Chicago Bulls baseball cap.
