Soldier from Overland Park killed in Afghanistan

A 28-year-old soldier from Overland Park was killed Friday morning while serving in Afghanistan.

Sgt. Mike Knapp died just days before he was to return home for a two-week leave, his family told The Star’s reporting partner KCTV. He was serving his third tour in Afghanistan.

Knapp, a graduate of Shawnee Mission North High School, became a father nine months ago when his wife, Abby, gave birth to a girl. His family had recently moved back to Kansas from the Northwest while he was overseas.

Knapp’s in-laws received the news Friday morning.

“Our son-in-law served bravely and he did what he wanted to do for his country,” Tom Brassfield, Knapp’s father in law, told KCTV.

An assistance fund has been set up for Kinsley, Knapp's nine-month-old daughter. Donations are accepted at any Valley View Bank location.
