Wichita police give new details on boy hurt in pool

Wichita police gave new information this morning about a 4-year-old boy taken in “very critical condition” to a hospital after being found unresponsive at the bottom of a swimming pool.

Police had no update on the child’s condition.

Lt. Doug Nolte gave this account: About 8 p.m. Thursday, police received a report of a possible drowning in the 2900 block of North Governeour, at East Hampton Estates apartments. Dispatchers received a 911 call that a 4-year-old boy who had been in a pool with several other children and adults had been found unresponsive at the bottom of the pool. The child was moved from the pool, and CPR was begun as an EMS crew was responding.

Police are treating the incident as an accident, Nolte said.

There is “no indication anyone did anything wrong here,” Nolte said, adding that “thoughts and prayers go out” to the boy’s family.

The child apparently didn’t have any flotation device; it wasn’t clear if the child knew how to swim, he said.

Nolte said the accident is a reminder that with the swimming season beginning, parents need to properly supervise swimming.
