Rescuers investigate empty boat in Missouri River

Rescue crews pulled an abandoned boat from the Missouri River near the Isle of Capri Casino but don’t believe anyone was missing from it.

“There was driftwood in the boat that had been dried and there was no motor to it,” said Battalion Chief Lew Hendricks, a spokesman for Kansas City Fire Department. “We checked the banks of river and the main channel and found no one.”

The fire department started searching the river between the Bond and Chouteau bridges after receiving a report about 8 a.m. of a boat floating down the river with no one aboard.

As a precaution, fire fighters responded to perform a water rescue to check out the boat and make sure no one had fallen in. The boat only had debris in it.

The boat was taken to the nearby River Front Park and was turned over to police.

The fire department was wrapping up the operation about 9 a.m.
