No suspects in February arson at barber shop

Fire investigators want the public’s help in solving an arson that gutted a barber shop in February.

The fire at Adrian’s Barber Shop, in a strip mall at 21st and Waco, was reported at about 4:45 a.m. on Feb. 4 and quickly grew into a two-alarm fire.

Along with destroying the barber shop, Fire Marshal Brad Crisp said, the blaze heavily damaged two adjacent businesses – a Farmers Insurance agency and Patty’s Fashion Bridal.

“It was reported late at night so the fire got a head start on us,” Crisp said. “It took nearly an hour for fire crews to bring that fire under control.”

Damage easily exceeded $100,000.

“We’re hoping somebody saw something,” he said.

Fire officials have been highlighting significant unsolved arsons during Arson Awareness Week.

There were 71 arsons last year in Wichita, Crisp said, and fire investigators solved 37 percent of them. That figure is in line with closure rates in recent years, he said, and ranks above the national rate of 25 percent.

But there are no suspects for the barber shop fire, Crisp said. Anyone with information about the fire should call the fire investigation unit at 316-337-9146 or Crime Stoppers at 316-267-2111.

“We really need for them to go back in their memory and recall that evening,” he said.
