TOPEKA --|Abortions declined for the fifth consecutive year in Kansas as the state passed increasingly tougher restrictions on the procedure.
Last year, there were 7,851 abortions reported in Kansas, down from 8,373 from the year before, according to new numbers released today by the state health department.
The abortion numbers have been dropping steadily since 2006, when there were 11,271 abortions performed in Kansas. Overall, abortions are down 30 percent since 2006.
About a third of women undergoing abortions in Kansas last year ranged in age from 20 to 24. Another 26 percent were in the 25-29 age bracket. Nine abortions were performed on girls under 14 years old.
A vast majority of the abortions, 4,976, were performed at less than nine 9 weeks of pregnancy. Eight would be considered so-called "late term" abortion since they were performed at 22 weeks or older.
