California man killed in wrong-way crash on U.S. 69

A 57-year-old San Clemente, Calif., man died this morning when his car collided head-on with a driver traveling the wrong way on U.S. 69 near Louisburg, Kan.

Scott E. Klein died in the crash shortly before 5:30 a.m. about two miles south of Kansas 68 in Miami County, according to Kansas Highway Patrol.

Klein was headed south on U.S. 69 when he collided with a minivan driven by Marilyn S. Nickell, 45, of Drexel, Mo.

She was headed north in the southbound lanes at the time of the crash, according to the highway patrol. She was flown to a Kansas City area hospital with critical injuries.

An update on her condition was not available this afternoon.

Both drivers were wearing seatbelts, according to the highway patrol.

Troopers closed the southbound lanes of U.S. 69 for several hours while they investigated the crash. The highway reopened about 11 a.m.
