University of Kansas pianist Crystal Lam, a 26-year-old doctoral student, won the first prize of $5,000 in the 2012 Naftzger Young Artists Auditions, which took place last weekend at Friends University.
Lam was one of seven finalists who performed at a public recital at the end of the competition. Her winning performance was made up of selections by Beethoven and Chopin.
Three other competitors won $2,000 awards: Douglas Perry, a KU graduate student and marimba player; Etta Fung, a KU soprano and doctoral student; and Chi Kit Lam, a pianist and graduate student.
The competition started with 48 musicians. It was put on by the Wichita Symphony Society.
