Police have released the name of the man who was killed when his motorized wheelchair was run over by a truck in southeast Wichita on Monday morning.
Thomas McCrory, 59, was riding west across Cypress at Harry just after 8:30 a.m. when he was struck by a truck turning south onto Cypress, Lt. Joe Schroeder said. The truck knocked McCrory out of his Hoveround and then ran him over.
McCrory was taken to a local hospital, where he died less than an hour later.
The 55-year-old driver of the truck said he never saw McCrory. Schroeder said the sun was just above rooftops at the time of the accident and glare was an issue for east-bound drivers.
Neither speed nor alcohol appear to be a factor in the collision, he said. Evidence in the case will be presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office, which will determine what, if any, charges will be filed.
McCrory lived in a nearby apartment complex and was returning from the grocery store when he was hit. He did not use a wheelchair all the time, Schroeder said, but used a Hoveround to get around.
This is the fourth traffic fatality of the year in Wichita and the second pedestrian killed.
Twelve-year-old Suhani Bhakta was struck and killed by a police officer in a patrol car on South Broadway on the night of Feb.12
