Authorities have released the names of the man and woman killed in a rollover crash on the Kansas Turnpike in northeast Butler County on Wednesday.
Angelica Avila, 37, and Larry Montez Barney, 30, both of Kansas City, Mo., were traveling south on the turnpike when the Chevrolet Explorer they were in drifted off the road and struck a delineator post about three miles south of Cassoday just after 1:30 p.m., according to the Kansas Turnpike Authority. As the driver attempted to get back onto the highway, the Explorer overturned.
Avila and Barney were ejected and died at the scene of the crash, authorities said. They were not wearing their seatbelts.
Authorities are not sure who was driving or what caused the Explorer to leave the road.
“We don’t know if it was distracted driving or not,” said Lisa Callahan, a spokeswoman for the turnpike authority.
