A Miami County sheriff’s officer shot a boy in the leg Friday after a report of a domestic disturbance.
Officers were called to a house in a rural area near 287th Street and Plum Creek Road, about 6 miles northwest of Paola, at 9:35 a.m.
Undersheriff Wayne Minckley said a woman at the house reported that her 15-year-old adopted son was fighting with his father. When officers arrived, the boy threw a pick ax at their vehicles, Minckley said. He then picked up a baseball bat and charged the officers.
The officers attempted to subdue the boy with a Tazer but were unsuccessful. Two officers were struck in the arm with the bat and one was knocked to the ground.
A sergeant fired his service revolver once and the bullet went through the boy’s upper leg.
The officers were treated and released. The boy was expected to recover.
The officers involved were placed on paid administrative leave pending department review.
The case will be submitted to the Miami County prosecutor, authorities said.
