A 24-year-old Shawnee mother faces possible child endangerment charges after she left two young boys home alone while she ran errands.
Police have forwarded the case to the district attorney’s office for possible charges, Shawnee police Capt. Dan Tennis said Saturday.
The incident happened Wednesday morning at the Valencia Hills apartments in the 10900 block of West 65th Street in Shawnee.
An apartment maintenance worker discovered the children, ages 4 and 5 years old, while trying to fulfill a work order, Tennis said.
When the worker knocked on the door, no one answered. The worker, though, could hear the children arguing about whether they should open the door.
The worker called police and when they arrived they convinced the children to open the door. The boys didn’t know how to reach their mother.
About a half hour later, the mother arrived home with a 2-year-old child and told police that when she left the boys, they were playing on a computer or watching TV, Tennis said.
“Obviously we were concerned about the welfare of the boys because they were too young to be left alone,” he said.
Police reported to the incident to social services and have turned the case over to the Johnson County district attorney for possible charges.
