Cochran Mortuary accepting donations for two veteran-related programs

Cochran Mortuary is accepting donations for two programs honoring or assisting veterans.

Contributions are being accepted toward wreaths to be placed on the graves of fallen soldiers during the 2011 Wreaths Across America ceremony on Dec. 10 at the Kansas Veterans Cemetery in Winfield. The wreaths are in addition to the seven wreaths laid in memory of veterans in each branch of service, the Merchant Marines and POW/MIAs.

“We are hoping to have enough donations to ensure that all veteran interment sites receive a wreath,” Brandi Phifer, office manager for Cochran Mortuary, said in a prepared statement. “Those who wish to contribute may send a $15 donation per wreath, and we welcome contributions from family, friends, local businesses and civic organizations.”

Checks should be made payable to Wreaths Across America by the Nov. 15 deadline.

Cochran is also acting as a collection site for the Cell Phones for Soldiers campaign. Used cellphones may be donated at the mortuary year-round. The cellphones are recycled by the organization Cell Phones for Soldiers, which earns credits through prepaid phone cards, which are sent overseas so soldiers can call home.
