Clearwater teacher charged with three counts of indecent liberties with a child

WICHITA — A Clearwater Middle School teacher was officially charged Monday with three counts of indecent liberties with a child.

Cathleen M. Balman, 39, was charged during her first appearance in Sedgwick County District Court. Her preliminary hearing has been set for Nov. 14.

She is out of jail on a $250,000 bond, a spokeswoman for the Sedgwick County District Attorney's Office said.

Balman is accused of indecent liberties with a 15-year-old boy, a former student, and maintaining relationship with him for at least a year.

Balman was arrested on Oct. 14 after interviews with the teacher and others led authorities to believe she had been involved with the boy.

She taught language arts to eighth-graders for three years prior to her arrest. She joined the school district in 2008 after teaching second-graders for one year at Argonia Elementary School.
