Sedgwick County inmate who escaped turns himself in

WICHITA — Marquez A. Kelly, a work release inmate who escaped earlier this month, turned himself in early this morning at the Sedgwick County Adult Detention Facility, 141 W. Elm.

"He just showed up in our lobby," said Capt. Barbara Maxwell of the Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office. "I haven't talked to him to determine where he was or what he was doing."

She said she plans to have that conversation with him today.

Kelly, 23, had five months left on a domestic violence battery conviction when he ran out the doors of the work release center, 701 W. Harry, on Aug. 4. Kelly, a trusty, was helping detention deputies serve lunch when he bolted.

Authorities had been searching for him ever since.

Kelly turned himself in shortly after midnight. He was booked on his original conviction as well on a county warrant for escape.

With the new charge, he will no longer be eligible to be a trusty, authorities said.
