Firefighters from more than a half-dozen departments battled a series of grass fires that broke out this afternoon in Harvey County. The fires were contained about 5 p.m. after burning for most of the afternoon.
Harvey County Sheriff T. Walton said the fires broke out near the railroad tracks that run along Hesston Road, which runs between Newton and Hesston. He said it appeared the fires were started by the hot brakes of a passing train.
Firefighters from Hesston, Newton, Halstead, Burrton, Sedgwick, Walton and Whitewater were fighting the fire with the help of the Harvey County Sheriff's Office and the Kansas Highway Patrol.
