Man crashes car into building, leads police on chase

After jumping the sidewalk and crashing into a building, a vehicle driven by a 21-year-old man led police on a car chase through neighborhoods near 21st Street and Broadway early this morning, police said.

Sgt. Steve Yarberry said officers saw the car speeding just before 2 a.m., when it lost control and struck a building in the 2200 block of North Broadway. When police tried to pull the car over, the driver drove off and led officers on a chase for about a mile.

The driver abandoned the vehicle near 17th and Waco, and police caught him after a foot chase, Yarberry said.

Officers booked the man into the Sedgwick County jail on suspicion of attempting to evade police, two counts of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol and having an open container. He was also jailed on suspicion of hit-and-run, reckless driving, running a stop sign, two counts of running a red light and other traffic violations.
