Derby man hurt in K-42 crash remains critical

WICHITA — A 48-year-old Derby man remains in critical condition at a local hospital, a day after he was hurt in a two-vehicle collision on K-42 southwest of Wichita.

Leon Frankiewicz was driving east on K-42 at about 11:20 a.m. when his Toyota sedan drifted left of the center line and hit the rear axle of a semi-trailer truck traveling west on K-42, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.

The collision closed K-42 at 135th Street West for nearly two hours. Frankiewicz was taken to Via Christi Hospital on St. Francis for treatment. The driver of the semi, 53-year-old Michael Bradford of Valley Center, refused treatment at the scene for minor injuries.

Authorities aren't sure why Frankiewicz's car drifted across the center line.
