Standoff ends at southwest Wichita home

A standoff with a man at a southwest Wichita home ended about 7:30 p.m. today when the man surrendered after officers sent tear gas into the home at Catherine and Kay, near Harry and Meridian.

After the man surrendered to SWAT team officers, Sedgwick County sheriff's officers took him to Via Christi Hospital on Harry for treatment. He was to be taken to a care facility afterward to be evaluated under a court order.

Sedgwick County Sheriff Robert Hinshaw said the standoff started at about 4 p.m. after two deputies brought the man a civil court order to take him into custody for an evaluation because he was thought to be a possible threat to himself or others.

The man, thought to be about 62, brandished a large stick and went inside the house, Hinshaw said. Authorities thought the man may have had "edged weapons" inside, Hinshaw said.

As a precaution, some nearby residents were asked to leave their homes.
