Elderly woman killed by train in Wellington

An elderly woman died this morning after a train in Wellington struck her while she was crossing some tracks between the 500 and 600 blocks of South Washington Avenue.

Wellington Police Capt. Bill Upton said the accident happened about 8:50 a.m. today. The train was heading east into Wellington at a slow speed, Upton said, because "it was getting ready to stop in Wellington."

The woman did not have any identification on her, Upton said. He said investigators are working now to identify her and notify family members.

The accident is the second fatality train crash to happen in the last 24 hours in Kansas.

A 19-year-old Hutchinson man, Aaron Decker, died after a train stuck him about 12:45 a.m. today in Hutchinson.
